Here's a sweet new litho print that I will post at higher res on my *temporary* main site later. Pretty fall colors, not-so-pretty fall subject matter. Clue: think folk song "Hollis Brown."

It was a three color deal, and it's my first print multiple color lithograph. It was printed using pronto plates of an ink drawing with 2 layers of digitally drawn tones. Lotsa headaches, but lotsa fun for sure! I'm moving on to stone litho next week. Legit!

I am back to posting and hopefully I can keep it up this time 'round! Sorry, folks. Well I should have some neat stuff to share since a lot has happened since my last post. Mainly, I am out of my foundation art courses and on my way as a print-maker :) There are some sweet updates to older posts and a whole grip of new, exciting influences I've seen this summer. And I promise to show my work from now on. Here's a quick one I'm doing for lithography, and I'll be back with more soon!!

I'm trying a new format for the blog: I'm gonna show images of things that have affected me over the past week so that you folks can get a better idea of the "negative space" that informs and inspires me. It's a little more conducive to my mode of thinking and hopefully will inspire you, me, and help generally organize my thoughts and communicate to whoever may be tuning in. 'nuff sed.

Arik Roper just melted mine! I really dig Fillmore posters from the sixties, and Arik just takes them and gives it a mean Frazetta punch with a hint of Alan Lee fantasy colors. Amazing typography mixes with rad stoner rock imagery to make a pretty effective brew. Definitely something to enjoy!

So I've been trying to bone up on my inking skills lately, and so I've been scouring the interwebs for new, different pen/brush techniques to little avail. And, lo, I stumbled on an artist that at once melted my face off with awesomness! While reading Proof, there was a secondary story drawn and inked by one Connor Willumsen that reminded me of Paul Pope's style, yet very unique.
At any rate I was thoroughly impressed by his body of work that includes comics and some definitely boss illustration work. And he's a spring chicken at only 22! That makes me feel all old and stuff :3 An inspiration for sheezy!

Here's some scans I got from my family's Childcraft encyclopedias. I've been looking for a particular late 70's-early 80's illustration style and rummaged though some old books. Hilarity! These photos are are a good indication of why we young people in our twenties are love kitchy crap from childhood. I love the image of the small child using the saw! We need to trust kids in workshops more often :) Oh, and the shell cleaning one is disturbing- just gather the animal-cruelty endorsed in the snippets of text. Good times. Serial killers in training. At any rate, nice, clean drawings+creepy subjects+hideous colors=fun childhood!

So it just so happens that my favorite indie hip-hop labelStones Throw Records also makes my favorite album art hands-down. And I gonna go out on a limb and say that their art director Jeff Jank has something to do with it =3 He has an awesome respect for the dying art of the album cover that I'm sure we can all relate to and mourn. It seems that everything he touches is just sweeter than hell, right down to the little jpegs attached to the periodic podcast mixtapes (say that 3x fast). StonesThrow=so good=Jeff Jank!

School Daze!

OMG! So sorry kind peoples! I've probably lost anyone who's ever looked at this blog with my terrible tardiness!! I'm blaming it on the new school year. That's my story and I'm sticking to it :P Anyway, things seem much more stable; moving's done, school is in full swing and my new work schedule is now ingrained into my circadian rhythm.
So here's a piece I'm submitting to a rad, local eco-friendly company called Green Element , and hopefully they like it! I went through a few drafts, but decided to go for a vintage Fillmore poster style. I think it's pretty rad. Gonna see about colors and such soon, so stay tuned! C U soon (promise).

Sorry for the long delay between posts! I've been getting ready for school and birthdays and moving and god knows what else is next. I've been painting a bit, so I'll try and get some pics up in the next coupla days and probably some sketchbook scans. See you soon... promise! In the meantime (and totally randomly) scope out the new Terminator trailer. So rad!!

Sorry it's been so long, folks :( I've been trying to find stuff to show you what I find really inspiring and tie them together in a nice little package for you :)

So here's a topic that keeps surfacing for me: Iceland! It seems to me that everything I see coming from that little corner of the world is so damned aesthetically pleasing! The design, the street art, the music... even the freaking landscape is beatiful!

It looks like a fractal with those unreal colors. Here's an oldie combining the stunning natural beauty with Björk's "Joga" and some awesome video processing:

And I just saw this while looking for some street art samples. It combines a painted wall piece with projected images. So cool.

It's all got a very unique style that I think draws so well from their environment in such a beautiful way. The colors I see used in buildings and art; the sparse and haunting chords and vocals of the music (traditional and contemporary) all seem to to be taken directly from the local pallette. I love seeing art as a mirror that shows our immediate perceptions and reactions to our habitat. Even their economy is very self-sufficient in their long use of geothermal energy to heat and power their homes and even run their cars! Never ceases to amaze me.

Yet another victim of civil prosperity :( An entire corner is coming down in Murray this week to make way for another [enter corporate chain name here], and down came a Greek retaurant that I remember going to from childhood. Soon to follow is one of Utah's oldest (if not original) sex shop, the French Lady. When the first building was demolished, there was revealed some interesting ads painted on a long-hidden wall.

Check out the sweet hand-painted lettering! I love those old fonts. On the top image in the upper-left corner there's a funny juxtaposition between the tail of a Coca Cola "C" and someone's lame tagging. And the thing that initially caught my eye was the wicked circus poster!

It's sad that historic districts are being plowed, but in a bittersweet turn we get to see some art we may have never seen. Doesn't mean we have to like it though... >:(

Finally, some new Banksy pieces. Take that society! I wish we had a little more social mischief in Salt Lake :( If anyone has any pics of street art you've seen around or just catches your eye, leave a comment: I'd love to see it!

I ran across Vania Zouravliov 's work in an issue of Computer Arts a few months ago and just recently stumbled on it again through random web browsing. The incredible detail in these pieces is staggering and just plain ridiculous! It's great to see such handiwork with pen and ink (my weapon of choice). They're reminiscent of 18th century anatomical and scientific drawings which I find nice and morbid :#

As if skeletons aren't cool enough, I remembered Vania had done work for Beck's last album and an article for Fader on Kanye! Sweet!

They always crack me up and have awesome guests. This week's show is with Sean Adams: the current prez of the AIGA. I've been listening to these guys since their days at the now defunct Be A Design Group podcast (R.I.P.) and they've shown me that design isn't all insurance ads and focus groups! Great for students to get a peek into the day-to-day of successful designers.
